Here in the Rother Valley long-term unemployment is still unacceptably high, with 505 people out of work for a year or more. This Government is still letting down our area.

We urgently need action to get local people into work. This is why I am calling for a compulsory jobs guarantee, which will get any adult out of work for more than two years, or young person out of work for a year, into a job – one they would be required to take. Ministers must get off their hands and start helping now before they condemn a whole generation to joblessness.

This week’s fall in overall unemployment is welcome, but the new figures also show working people are continuing to see their pay fall far behind the cost of living. Working people have seen their real wages fall by over £1,600 a year since 2010. The Government’s failure to act on low pay has led to millions of people struggling to get by, huge additional costs in Housing Benefit and Tax Credits paid to those in work, and the Office for Budget Responsibility warning about the impact on the public finances.
I would like the Government to adopt plans to raise the national minimum wage to £8. This would be one way to tackle the cost of living crisis and ensure we earn our way to higher living standards for all, not just a few at the top.
