/ Statement following convictions in Child Sexual Exploitation trial
24 Feb 2016
Following the verdict today (24 February 2016) that four men and two women have been convicted of child sex abuse offences, Kevin Barron released this statement;
I pay tribute to the victims and survivors, their courage and determination is an inspiration. Today we finally see justice done for some of them and their families who have endured so many years of abuse.
I hope that today’s verdicts will serve as a beacon for other victims and survivors of abuse, today has shown that offenders will be tracked down and put before the court. I would urge them to please come forward and report any offences.
It is clear that the police did not properly investigate allegations in the past and this has been proven throughout this trial. But I am confident going forward under Rotherham District Commander Jason Harwin’s leadership they can start to right the wrongs of the past.
Anyone who is concerned about the safety of a young person, or who may be suffering abuse themselves, is urged to seek help. Call police on 101 or the MASH Team (Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub) on 01709 336080. Always dial 999 in an emergency.
