Local News / Fairtrade Fortnight Makes Difference
This week saw the start of Fairtrade Fortnight (22nd February - 7th March) and I welcome the Government's plan to boost funding for the Fairtrade labelling system.
When consumers and retailers act together to promote and buy goods from developing countries, it can make a real difference to the lives of some of the world's poorest people.
Small changes in our shopping habits can help these people become independent and I urge shoppers in the Rother Valley to look for the Fairtrade mark.
I was therefore delighted that a Fairtrade farmer from Colombia, Francisco Herrero, visited the new Maltby Leisure Centre cafe on Tuesday to see for himself where his coffee is sold.
I am also pleased that Rotherham is reaffirming its Fairtrade status with a special event at the Wharncliffe Restaurant at the College of Arts and Technology this Friday evening.
Students there are serving up an eight course gourmet meal using Fairtrade and local produce, the proceeds of any profit being shared between 'Coffee Kids' and Rotherham's 'Speak-up Self Advocacy Group'.
