Yesterday the Education Secretary Michael Gove announced the Government’s intentions to scrap the planned school rebuilding scheme for a number of schools in our area. The announcement stated that the rebuilding of Aston Comprehensive and Maltby Hilltop Special will no longer go ahead, while plans to rebuild Maltby Academy are open for discussion. I have written to the Education Secretary to request an urgent meeting with him about the Academy.

New school buildings are more than just a source of pride for pupils, parents and teachers. They improve discipline, standards and they are a springboard for the future of our children. The much-needed investment provided by the Building Schools for the Future programme would have provided decent 21st Century facilities for children to learn.

That is why pupils, parents and teachers at these schools will be hugely disappointed that the planned school buildings they were promised will not now happen.

The Coalition Government’s decision to cut these major building projects does seem somewhat short-sighted given that it comes at a time when jobs in the construction industry are in short supply and when economic growth is still weak. It looks as though this may be yet another Government decision that hits South Yorkshire hard and puts the recovery at risk.
