At a recent meeting of the All-Party Coalfields Community Group in Parliament the Group received a briefing from the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) about miners' compensation claims.

The SRA has now concluded 67 separate on site inspections of firms involved in coal health claims. Of the 67 inspections, 13 have not required any formal report, however of the 54 concluded inspections where issues of concern were identified, to date, 28 have resulted in prosecutions before the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal, including a number of firms’ partners either being fined or struck off.

The SRA also confirmed that, to date, over £10 million has been repaid to clients by firms as a result of investigations/actions by themselves and the Legal Complaints Service. These actions followed complaints by former miners about the poor advice they received from solicitors and deductions being made from their damages.
