The Government have recently announced a major review of environmental legislation and regulations, as part of the Red Tape Challenge.
Once the consultation has closed Ministers will have three months to argue for what stays and goes. This creates a major opportunity for the Government to water down environmental protection, from the Climate Change Act through to wildlife protection and pollution regulations.
I am concerned about the Government's proposed bonfire of these environmental regulations. In just a year, Ministers have succeeded in undermining the very principles on which environmental protection has been built in the UK.
