I was pleased to hear that the Chesterfield Canal Trust’s hybrid electric boat project has made the finals of the Jubilee People’s Millions contest in the ITV Yorkshire and Humberside region.

The Trust hopes to provide an electric powered narrow boat with an electro-hydraulic system to enable any user to steer the boat from anywhere within it. It will be fully accessible and allow people with disabilities, families, school children and older people to enjoy the boat. The boat will be based on the Canal at Kiveton Park.

A film about the project, which is supported by both Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and Wales High School, will be broadcast by ITV on Calendar at 6 pm on Monday 27 June. The project will compete against another community project and the public will be asked to vote for their favourite. If the Trust’s project gets more votes than the other one it will be awarded a £60,000 grant.

You can vote by phone, with the number being released at 9am on 27 June. The phone number will appear on www.peoplesmillions.org.uk
