New crime figures published last week showed that overall crime has not fallen this year. More disturbingly, the figures showed that domestic burglary, domestic violence and violent crime are all up. These are very worrying signs.
At a time when progress on cutting crime is stalling, the Government is choosing to take risks with community safety by cutting over 12,000 police officers. People want crime to fall further, but the Government is doing nothing to help.
Chief Constables have been put in an impossible position by the sheer scale and pace of the Government's 20 per cent police cuts which go too far, too fast.
Having set out no strategy for cutting crime, the Government appears to be making it harder for the police to do their jobs.
