With charities losing some £1.3 billion a year to fraud, Crimestoppers has established the Charity Fraud Line, an anonymous reporting system for people to give information about fraudulent attacks on charities.
Charities can register for this free service by providing a trusted point of contact to whom information can be passed as well as promoting the service internally. Although it is in its early days the service has already prevented two serious losses, though most reports concern individuals who have raised funds in the name of a charity but have kept the money for themselves.
By taking information about charity members who are acting dishonestly and diverting funds, the Charity Fraud Line helps to protect public donations to various charities from being misused and prevented from helping the charity cause.
