Following a recommendation from the Work & Pensions Secretary, Parliament has taken the decision to amend the Social Security Regulations and add 'Lung cancer for coke oven workers' to the list of prescribed industrial diseases.

A prescribed disease or injury is one which is recognised by the Secretary of State to have been caused by a person's occupation, leading to the individual being able to claim an amount of Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit, depending on the severity of the condition.

The change will enable any coke oven worker who contracts lung cancer after 1 August 2012, and who meets the criteria outlined in the Regulations to make a claim for Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit.
