The Highways Agency have provided me with an update about renewal works on the M1.
Renewal works to the central reserve barrier on the M1 between junctions 32 and 35a have recently been completed, whilst renewal work to the central reserve barrier between junctions 28 and 31 is currently underway. These works involve construction of a hardened central reserve concrete barrier and have been, or are being, undertaken within the existing motorway boundary. They will result in safety benefits for motorists and those who work on the motorway network.
Both these locations are also the subject of managed motorway proposals, which are currently undergoing assessment to consider the operational principles of both schemes to help mitigate against any potential environmental impact. The results of these assessments and the associated recommendations will be known shortly.
South Yorkshire Police continue to have major safety concerns about the plans to use the hard shoulder as a live lane 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on the M1 between junctions 32 and 35a. I have recently written to the Transport Minister to raise such concerns.
