There are a number of websites in existence that are charging people for European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs), when they are available free of charge for people who are ordinarily resident in the UK.

As the summer holidays approach, people will be preparing for holidays and applications for EHICs usually rise significantly, therefore it is important for people to know how to apply for free.

If you are being asked to pay for your EHIC, you are not on the official EHIC application website. Further information, including how to apply, can be found at www.gov.uk/european-health-insurance-card or by calling 0300 3301350.

An EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance, when travelling within Europe people should ensure that they have both.
