The Government is forcing Northern Rail to introduce evening peak ticket restrictions on local rail services as part of their franchise extension. The huge stealth fare hikes passengers face from this week has been revealed by new analysis.
From Monday 8 September, off-peak tickets will no longer be valid on some train services which depart between 4.01pm and 6.29pm on weekdays.
Some passengers who previously used off-peak tickets face sharp increases in their fares. For example someone travelling from Kiveton Park or Kiveton Bridge station to Sheffield will now have to pay £6, up from £4.80 - an increase of 25%.
The Government’s recent proposals for the future of Northern and TransPennine services set out plans for further fare increases, cuts to services and continued use of old Pacer trains.
